Hyundai Recall Due to Issue with Remote Parking Assist Feature

Published on May 27th, 2020

Hyundai vehicles that are equipped with its smart parking system are being recalled. This recall is due to an error with the software that may cause the vehicle to continue moving even if the system malfunctions. This causes the vehicle to move in its last commanded direction even if there was a detected error.

Impacted Vehicles

The feature is called Remote Smart Parking Assist that is only available on certain 2020 Hyundai Sonata Limited and Hyundai Nexo vehicles. This highly publicized feature is capable of moving the vehicle back and forth into or out of a perpendicular parking spot using minor steering adjustments regardless if there is a driver in the vehicle. Operators must press a button continuously on the key fob.

Discovering the Flaw

During routine development testing, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration found the flaw. There was a software update for vehicles moving forward, however, the vehicles that were already produced were not recalled. Owners of Hyundai vehicles can call Hyundai directly at 855-371-9460 to see if their vehicle is impacted and the company will begin notifying owners at the beginning of June 2020.
